They also have 3rd Party cleints, That run in linux. I use ddclient.  It is written in perl. You can even get it to email
you when the status has change or a force update has been made.

The external interface ain't gonna show up in a traceroute 
and no event is registered.  The only was I see to do it 
at the moment is to fetch the status screen thru http and 
parse it out of that output.
