For gnome-terminal, select the edit->Current profile

Then select the Effects tab.  Select the transparent background radio 
button.  I think the slider below that is supposed to adjust the 
opacity, but it doesn't seem to work for me.  Eterm has transparency and 
I believe konsole does as well.
