Run identify against the before/after images and it will likely tell 
you.  When you say smaller, you mean file size correct?

What format?  I assume jpeg.  It could be the quality of the image, 
although GIMP normally presents you with sliders where you can adjust 
the quality/smoothing and such, before saving.
