[ale] network intermittently going down, HUH ?

Running Debian 2.4.17, I find that from time to time my network needs to
be restarted else I'm unable to communicate with the other machines on
the lan.

The command being used is..........
	networking restart

Also, afterwards, I often must also implement the following commands to
achieve functionality:

ifconfig tunl0 down
ifconfig tunl0 arp up
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 up
route add default gw 'linuxbox' ;linuxbox being the lan router

On the other hand, a Freebsd box I also run, often runs without
interruption for months.

What's wrong and how do I cure it, please ?

Thank you.
